About us

Between January and July 2009 an independent panel called the Cambridgeshire Transport Commission carried out an investigation of the transport and congestion challenges in and around Cambridge. The independent Commission was set up by Cambridgeshire County Council in light of the mixed response to its own consultation held in 2008 regarding a proposed bid to Government for £500m to improve public transport, walking, cycling and roads through a Transport Innovation Fund bid which would include a possible congestion charge.

The Commission's investigation was conducted initially through an online survey of local residents, in total over 1000 people responded. The Commission then invited a wide range of individuals, groups, councils, organisations, businesses and experts to give evidence directly at 15 public hearings held across the County. In total 119 witnesses appeared to give their views.

All the evidence gathered was considered by the Commission who then made their final recommendations to the County Council.

What are News Feeds?

News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and video in one place, as soon as it's published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from. Feeds are also known as RSS.

What is RSS?

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" -- it's a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs.

Web publishers use RSS to easily create and distribute news feeds that include links, headlines, and summaries. There are many sites that now deliver updated online content via RSS. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

It takes the hassle out of staying up-to-date, by showing you the very latest information that you are interested in.

How do I start using feeds?

In general, the first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.).

The Firefox browser supports Live Bookmarks, a system that detects RSS feeds and allows users to subscribe. Look for this icon in the bottom right corner of your browser or in the address bar, and click on it to subscribe. Feeds will appear in your Bookmarks list.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Internet Explorer 7, automatically check for RSS feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to RSS feeds much easier.

Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

News Aggregators (also called news readers) will download and display RSS feeds for you. Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive.

You will notice an orange button on the e-magazine, click it to set up your feed.

How do I get a news reader?

There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.

What are the terms of use?

The feeds are provided free of charge for use by individuals and non-profit organizations for personal, non-commercial uses.
